TOMATINA attracts record crowds.

The roads ran red when 40,000 visitors and locals participated in Buñol’s famous tomato-hurling event last Wednesday.

At noon, municipal trucks dumped about 113,000kg of ripe, juicy plum tomatoes at the feet of adrenaline-charged crowds in the town's main square. Within minutes the area was dripping with red slime, and clouds of tomato sauce filled the air.

Officials pelted the crowds, who retaliated by flinging their over-ripe missiles back at the officials and each other. The squashed tomato battle went on for an hour, until officials sounded the alarm. It is absolutely forbidden to hurl tomatoes after this moment, as the streets need to be cleared of tomato seeds and pulp before the mess starts to dry.

The unusual celebration is known as La Tomatina and takes place on the last day of the fiesta honouring the town’s patron saint. The fun began in 1944 when a group of friends had an impromptu tomato fight and enjoyed it so much that they met the following year to pelt passers-by. Curiously, this has evolved into an annual fiesta that becomes more popular every year.

Although there were some injuries, fewer people were hurt than in previous years.
