Cheap Houses in Teruel

The residents of Teruel in Spain are celebrating. For decades, this beautiful province near Valencia appeared to have been forgotten by both Spanish and international tourists. The locals felt so neglected they set up a pressure group, “Teruel Existe!” After years of lobbying, the campaign has paid off. Teruel is now considered to be one of the best areas in which to invest in property. The locals were stunned by the amount of interest they have managed to generate.

Located in the south of Aragón, Teruel has a distinctive atmosphere. The hilltop villages have a strong Islamic influence and the houses are a blend of Moorish and European Gothic. Tourists visit the capital to see the spectacular Mudéjar architecture, which has been included on the Unesco world heritage list, and the magnificent cathedrals and medieval belfries.

While Teruel town has its charms, it is worth leaving the capital to explore the region further. It takes about half an hour to drive to Albarracín. The brick-red fortress town creates an impact as soon as it comes into view, with its medieval ramparts that sprawl over the hillside. It has the feel of an Arab medina and it is fascinating to view the varieties of rather chaotic plaster buildings that bulge on to the streets.

But if you want to get away from it all, there are many other hilltop villages that are far less populated. Some of the more isolated regions conjure up images of the Wild West, where you can see for miles over the rugged landscape.

The Spanish Government has decided to regenerate Teruel province and plans to repopulate the region. One of the first schemes is to create a new motorway link that will allow visitors to drive from Valencia airport to Teruel in less than an hour. This should certainly draw more visitors to the region as the journey takes at least two hours and is an exhausting drive. The Government wants the motorway to be completed before the America’s Cup comes to Valencia in 2007. Teruel will then become a more attractive proposition for investors seeking a holiday home, and property prices will almost certainly rise.

Eric and Jan Wright discovered the charms of Teruel 13 years ago and have lived there since. They bought a rundown 17th-century flour mill for £7,500. Eric said: “We were living in Alicante and visited Teruel only because a friend told us that there was a beautiful property for sale. But as soon as we arrived, we succumbed to the region’s charm — rural Spain at its best.”

Eric and Jan have a few suggestions for people interested in buying property in Teruel. “People should be aware that Teruel is completely different from coastal Spain. You have to like space and tranquillity to live here. It is also vital to learn Spanish, as very few people speak English. That said, if you do make an effort to learn the language, the people are extremely friendly and welcoming. We are seeing a few more British people buying here now and I am not surprised. It is a lovely place to live and, while Jan and I were tempted to keep this fact a secret, the reality is that Teruel is truly a hidden gem.”
